About Bulgaria
Bulgaria has existed for more than 13 centuries in Europe. This beautiful country links the mystic East and opulent West.
Located in Southeastern Europe, Bulgaria covers an area of 110,994 square kilometers (slightly smaller than England).
It is bounded by Romania to the north, the Black Sea to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, Macedonia to the southwest, and Serbia to the west.
The capital of the country is Sofia, which lies in a mountainous basin in the west, near the geographic centre of the entire Balkan region. The country has a striking array of topographic features from vast woodlands to stunning beaches and dazzling mountains. Indeed a perfect location for all your holiday needs.
Mountain Resorts
From rugged snow-capped peaks to crystal-clear blue lakes, the mountain ranges of Bulgaria have it all.
Bulgarian skiing resorts are on par with any other major European destination. However the mountains have a lot more to offer, there are countless mineral springs and a network of nature reserves.
Bulgaria has three main mountain ranges each exhibiting quite different features but all very beautiful.
The best-known mountains are(highest peak Mussala - 2,925 m.), Pirin (Vihren - 2,914 m.) and Vitosha (Cherni Vrah - 2,291 m.)
Spa Resorts
Bulgaria is blessed with 500 different deposits of mineral waters with over than 1600 water sources. The curative properties of the Bulgarian mineral waters were known and used from antiquity. Ancient mineral complexes were built near the mineral springs, Hisaria- ancient Augusta or Bourgas' mineral baths - Aque Kalite, later Thermopiles, to name just a few. In different areas the water has different chemical compositions. Different areas have different degrees of mineralisation, temperature and healing properties.
The Sea
The Black Sea is renowned for its clean calm waters that attract millions of visitors every year. The lack of any tidal activity and the safe nature of the sea, there are no dangerous fish in these waters, make this 380km coastline a top ten European beach destination.
In fact the majority of Bulgaria beaches have been awarded the EU Blue Flag for their environmental excellence. During the summer the temperature lies between 22°C and 27°C, with water temperatures between 17°C and 24°C. The coastline is home to broad sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, working vineyards and hidden little coves. All in all, the coast makes a great holiday destination.
Sea Resorts
There is a wide variety of accommodation to choose from at the beach. From 5 star resorts to picturesque campsites visitors can find the perfect fit for every budget and vacation style.
Northern resorts - These resorts are located around the city of Varna, Bulgaria's biggest city on the Black Sea.
The famous resorts are Varna itself, Golden Sands, Albena, Riviera, Rusalka, St. Constantine and Elena.
Southern resorts -The southern resorts are located near the city of Bourgas.
These include Sunny Beach, the biggest of the Black Sea resorts, Sveti Vlas, Nessebar and Sozopol.
National Parks & Reserves
Bulgaria has 3 incredible national parks, Rila, Pirin, and the Central Balkan. It can also boast 2 230 protected territories and natural landmarks.
Pirin National Park and Sreburna Biosphere Reserve have been included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. They together with other 16 biosphere reserves offer wonderful conditions for nature photography, scientific-and-eco tourism and the simple nature hike.
Lakes
There are about 330 natural lakes in Bulgaria; the largest are the Black Sea lakes around Bourgas and Varna.
However the most numerous, over 260, are the breath taking high-mountain glacial lakes in the Rila and Pirin mountain ranges.
Many tourists plan their summer hikes to experience these natural wonders.
